About Madrid
Madrid is the capital city of Spain. It is a modern metropolitan city with a population of nearly 3.5 million people which makes it the biggest city in Spain and the third most-populous metropolis in Europe (after Paris and London).  Madrid is a city to enjoy and share, with 144 museums, almost 3,000 hours of sunshine per year, 6 public and 7 private universities, and more than 5.000 restaurants.  Located on the banks of the Manzanares River, in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula, 646 meters (2,119 feet) above sea level and is surrounded by mountains and natural parks. The city's many parks make Madrid the greenest city in Europe.
Art and culture play a key role in Madrid's cultural life. The city is full of great monuments, like the royal palace, the Plaza Mayor or the many statuettes. Art highlights in Madrid include the museums Del Prado, one of the world's most important art galleries, Thyssen, with over 800 paintings ranging from primitive Flemish artists through to the avant-garde movements as well as Reina Sofia National Art Centre, dedicated to contemporary Spanish art and containing works by Picasso, Joan Miró, Salvador Dalí and Juan Gris, among others.  If there's one thing that sets Madrid apart, it must be its deep and catching passion for life that finds its outlet in the friendly and open character of its residents. Concerts, exhibitions, ballets, the latest film releases, the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of the best Spanish and international gastronomy... all these are just a few of the leisure options Madrid has to offer.  Exploring the historical and cultural legacy of this capital city will leave you with an exceptional experience. Madrid never loses her potent energy to influence the heart and alter the lives of all who visit.
